I’ve learned that design is not only about making things look good.

It is about helping people understand each other, align on direction, and move forward together.

The real problem

I once joined a team whose project had been stuck for more than 17 months.

The issue was not a lack of skill or effort. It was a communication breakdown.

Why the team was stuck

1. Stakeholders did not fully understand the project.

2. They worried the outcome would not match their expectations.

3. No one was clearly responsible for bridging the gap.

Everyone wanted the same outcome. But technical language, unclear messaging, and different perspectives kept the team and stakeholders apart.

Stakeholders felt lost. The team felt frustrated.

What I changed

To understand the problem, I joined meetings, recorded discussions, reviewed where conversations broke down, and studied similar cases.

The insight became clear: understanding matters more than explaining.

• Active listening — using open gestures and questions so people felt heard, not judged.

• Simple language — replacing technical jargon with relatable examples.

• Visual alignment — showing progress in a way every stakeholder could understand.

The result

The project finally moved forward after 17 months of being stuck.

The team and stakeholders started speaking the same language, both literally and figuratively.

I left with one of the most important lessons of my career: design is not just about execution. It is about communication.
